This year it is the 75th Anniversary of the Santa Marija Convoy – the great episode of Maltese history in which the Ohio tanker and its escort barely made it to Malta during the Second World War. The ships provided vital supplies to save Malta from surrender.
Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar will be holding a unique commemoration of this event at the Senglea waterfront on the 12th of August. This shall take the form of a Son et Lumiere performance. This narrative, written by Alfred Mallia, will feature never before seen diaries and interview footage to be read out and given life by Paul Xuereb, Monica Attard, Paul Portelli and Alfred Mallia. Re-enactors will also participate, as will the Police of Malta in a ceremonial capacity and members of the veterans’ association.
Violin virtuoso Lorenzo Meraviglia will be performing with his Stradivarius as part of the performance, and re-enactors will also breathe life into this ultimate moment in the history Malta shares with the many other countries which contributed to the convoy.
The performance will be followed by a reception in the Gardjola Garden of Senglea, where the Police Jazz Band will be performing, and where light refreshments will be offered.
Do not miss this unique event which brings together many of Malta’s best and brightest.

This joint concert will feature two musical performances – one by Stradivarius playing prodigy, Lorenzo Meraviglia, and the other shall feature a musical piece about the Santa Marija Convoy itself. This musical piece is currently being written for this special occasion by American composer John Kennedy, whose students will perform to bring the Santa Marija Convoy to life alongside the famous Lorenzo Mervagilia.
