Revelations on Paintings from Leonardo to Van Gogh

Revelations on some of the world’s best-known artistic masterpieces as a result of research carried out at the Italian National Research Council (CNR). Professor Austin Nevin, chemist and conservator, a Researcher at the Institute of photonics and nanotechnologies (IFN) will give a lecture on the analysis of paintings and painting materials carried out by the Italian Research Council.

This study of ancient and modern cultural heritage using optical and spectroscopic techniques has produced exciting revelations in paintings spanning from Leonardo to Van Gogh, and has provided invaluable insights into the creation of some of the world’s best-known artistic masterpieces.

The visit of Professor Nevin has come about as part of FAA’s project to restore the late Medieval ‘Madonna of Mercy’ 4-panel altarpiece at St Mark’s Augustinian Priory, Rabat. A donation of €10 is solicited in order to support the restoration of this polyptych, described as one of Malta’s most important art treasures. Students’ special rate: €5.
