Għajn Tuffieħa Tower, one of the seven fortifications built under Grand Master Lascaris, was built in 1637 to strategically defend the Maltese Islands against Ottoman and corsair attacks. To address this vulnerability on the northwestern coast, Lascaris strategically placed Għajn Tuffieħa and Lippija Tower strategically guarding the area of Gnejna Bay.

Għajn Tuffieħa Tower has been subject to numerous warnings from researchers and professionals regarding its deteriorating condition. A 2007 PhD study sounded an early warning, highlighting the critical risk of coastal erosion and its potential impact on the tower’s stability. Later on in 2023, Storm Helios exacerbated these concerns, causing significant damage, including a large hole in the tower’s upper corner.

The urgent need for action to prevent irreversible damage to Għajn Tuffieħa Tower has been highlighted by Din l-Art Ħelwa. FAA commends their efforts to preserve this invaluable historical asset and calls upon the authorities to take immediate action. Safeguarding these towers is crucial for preserving our heritage and connecting us with our history.
