FAA Malta congratulates 22-year-old Ryan Portelli of Rabat, who has secured the top prize at the EPP’s 11th European Congress of Young Farmers, marking the first time a Maltese nominee has received this prestigious honour. Portelli was put forward by MEP Peter Agius for his work within Syneco, a pioneering pilot project coordinated by Chris Ciantar that is charting new territory in sustainable agriculture.
Syneco focuses on transforming pig and cow waste into clean energy and high-quality fertiliser, demonstrating how innovative technology can turn an environmental challenge into an opportunity. By promoting circular-economy practices and resource efficiency, the project highlights how farming communities can play a central role in reducing pollution while improving soil and water quality.
Speaking at the Congress in Brussels, MEP Agius emphasised that Portelli’s success underlines the role of farmers as “a key part of the solution to protect the environment”. Syneco’s collaborative model, uniting farmers, researchers and technology providers, showcases how practical solutions can emerge directly from the agricultural sector.
Portelli stressed the importance of supporting initiatives that begin on the ground and can grow into nationwide solutions, while also giving farmers the time and tools needed to adapt to evolving environmental realities.
Through its innovative system, Syneco enables farmers to safely process animal waste, convert it into usable fertiliser, analyse soil and water conditions, and access expert guidance through a dedicated app. The project also facilitates the recovery of ammonium sulphate solution.
Portelli’s achievement is a milestone for Malta and an encouraging sign of what young, sustainability-minded farmers can accomplish for our environment.
