Doing small things from small spaces – what really is this sustainability?
The concept of sustainability has become overly complicated and is often associated with technical terms used by experts in government and the academia. But the truth is, achieving sustainability is about making small, everyday changes in our own lives, families, workplaces, and communities.
Taking small steps every day is essential to making sustainability a reality. It helps build momentum and confidence, making it easier to tackle larger challenges. In fact, small actions can become lasting habits that will produce meaningful change and serve as inspiration to others.
An example of such simple ways to start making small differences could be to swap disposable plastic bags for reusable ones. We all know that plastic wastes is a global phenomenon. However, every plastic waste emanates from 1 person at a time. This person comes from a family, and a part of the larger community. By taking that decision of reusing our plastic bag, we reduce plastic waste. This small change can have a big impact, as plastic bags contribute to plastic waste, harming the environment and wildlife.
Therefore, sustainability is to:
Choose the right materials made from sustainable materials, such as cotton, jute, or recycled plastics.
Store reusable bags in convenient easy to reach locations like your cars or backpack
Make it a consistent habit by using reusable bags for every shopping trip.
Next time you hear the word “sustainability”, remember it is not just a big concept – it can be as simple as making a few small changes, like using reusable bags every time you shop.
